Why My Dog Wears a Collar

I believe that, in most cases, dogs should wear collars all the time for easy identification and safe restraint around the house and out in public. I know that if I pass a loose dog on the street, a collar with ID tags will encourage me to stop and see if I can help the dog back home. If I lost my dog, I’d hope that someone would do the same for me.

How I Checked the Fit on the Dog Collar

First, I measured my dog’s neck. I took a string and wrapped it around his neck where I wanted his collar to sit. I marked the spot where it overlapped and measured the string on a ruler. I then used that as my guide while collar shopping.

After I chose an adjustable dog collar that should fit, I snapped it closed and checked to see that the fit allowed me to comfortably get two fingers between the fastened collar and my dog’s neck. Then I checked to make sure I couldn’t slide the collar over my dog’s head. Collars that can slip off over a dog’s head may do so while he’s on leash, leaving him at risk of getting lost without any identification on. A collar that loose could also catch on something and slip off, once again leaving him without ID.

My dog is very small, so I picked a narrow collar. A too-wide collar might make it hard him to move comfortably. But narrow collars aren’t best for every dog. Owners of large dogs might find that narrow collars cut into their dog’s necks while attached to their dog leash during walks.

It might not seem fair to “take” a link without giving one back, but there are other ways you can help the linking website. If they have a satellite website, you could consider linking to that in the body of one of your posts — relevant topic / contextual link / deep link to the satellite site. Just be careful that the link partner understands that directly linking from the satellite site to their main site will not be nearly as good as if they link in a broad circle of 10 sites before returning to the main site.
