Holiday Party Planning Done Right

As we approach the vacation season, usually awash with vacation parties, it got me brooding about how workers are rewarded. Certainly one of the chief reasons for hosting a company holiday party is to reward workers for their difficult work and dedication, and there may be money reasons as well.&nbsp ;

a holiday party does something else too. It creates a space for workers and management to get together not as workers, but as buddies. It offers a chance for folk to come together and luxuriate in the company of the people you work with without worrying about the base line, which is something that isn’t occur much across the year. Sure there could be financial benefits ( see the article linked above ), but this is essentially done by creating a little bit of goodwill that goes a long way. It lets your workers know that you place a value on them and their work. So when I see that companies are deciding against doing a party due to the economy I worry about the message this sends to&nbsp ; staff, plenty of whom doubtless anticipate and expect some kind of year end celebration. When times are tough, which undoubtedly is the case in numerous industries, it’s particularly crucial to show staff you care.

If you normally do an extravagant celebration, of course it’s understandable that you’d cut back a touch, but do not get rid of the party altogether. Do it smaller, simpler and smarter. You can change the scale without spoiling the event. If you normally hire a celebrity comedian, for example, think about using talent locally. If you normally do an extravagant meal, do a smorgasboard, or maybe a potluck. My point is do something. If you can afford to use vacation party entertainment, I’d definitely commend it. Using a corporate comic is a good way to get people’s’s minds off the economy for 45-60 mins and it gives your visitors a typical experience to talk ( and joke ) about for coming months and leaves everybody feeling better ( nicely timed for the holidays ).
